Many customers ask for a chandelier to be hung over their bathtub. Many are not happy when we say that we can not do this because it is against the electrical code. So to clarify here is the explanation. Is it against the electrical code to hang a chandelier over a tub? Yes, hanging a chandelier directly over a bathtub is considered against building code, as most electrical codes stipulate that no light fixture should be positioned within a 3-foot horizontal and 8-foot vertical zone above the bathtub rim, meaning the bottom of the chandelier must be at least 8 feet above the tub or positioned at least 3 feet away from the tub's edge.
